Nicolet College’s Learning in Retirement program will launch its Fall Session Thursday, Sept. 6, with its annual Kick-Off social and dinner starting at 4:30 p.m. in the Lakeside Center on Nicolet’s Rhinelander Campus. New members are encouraged to join and take part in the Kick-Off as well as any of the record 46 different educational offerings available September through December. “This is a great way for active retirees to meet new people and learn new things,” said Brenda Peltier, Learning in Retirement (LIR) coordinator. “The whole point is to have fun and stay active. Every opportunity we offer is designed to do exactly that.” Annual membership is $45 per person, which is good July 1 to June 30. Individuals can join at any time during the year. The Fall Kick-Off will start with a cash bar social at 4:30 followed at 5 p.m. with the welcome, introductions, and LIR updates. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. with a choice of braised pork loin with apple cider glaze or turkey scaloppini with cranberry butter. Vegetables, rolls, dessert, and beverages will also be served. Paco Fralick will provide musical entertainment. Cost for dinner is $16 for members and $18 for guests. Registrations must be received by Thursday, Aug. 30. Upcoming offerings in the 2018 Fall Session include the popular Pirate Ship Cruise on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes. Last year this filled up fast so this year the LIR is offering two different voyages on the Eagle River Chain. Both are on Thursday, Sept. 13, with one departing at 10 a.m. and the other at 1 p.m. from Eagle River Pirates, 1998 N. Hwy. 45 in Eagle River. The cost for the Pirate Ship Cruise is an additional $18 for members. Other notable sessions running September through December include: - Dr. Zorba Paster presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, in the Nicolet College Theatre. Join this popular, entertaining and informative Wisconsin Public Radio host as he provides health and fitness tips for a full and healthy life. This event is free and open to the public. - A tour of the Birds in Art Exhibit at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau. The experience will include a one-hour guided tour of the museum, one of only two in the country to receive the National Medal of Arts in 2017, along with a 30-minute hands-on experience. - Ced’s Nature Series. On eight consecutive Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., Sept. 12 to Oct. 31, local experts and specialists will present on a wide variety of topics that include the lives of osprey in the Northwoods and the status of lake sturgeon in Wisconsin. - The Inner Workings of the U.S. State Department Wednesday, Oct. 3. Retired Special Agent Kim Starke of the Bureau of Diplomatic Services will provide an insider’s look into U.S. diplomacy from the days when relations rested in the hands of individual Ambassadors to now when 24-hour communication is the norm. - Tours of iconic Northwoods enterprises WXPR Public Radio studios Friday, Oct. 5, or Monday, Nov. 5, and the Golden Harvest Market Thursday, Oct. 25.
