Press Release Text:

The dramatic and expansive landscape of Iceland will be featured in a travelogue at Nicolet College Wednesday, April 10, when Antigo artist and designer Craig Pilecky shares his experiences and photography at 7:30 p.m. in the Northwoods Center. His illustrated presentation will focus on the sights along Iceland’s legendary Ring Road, noted for its otherworldly mountain scenery, active volcanoes, vast lava fields, blue icebergs, and thunderous waterfalls. Pilecky began documenting the spectacular Nordic landscapes in the winter of 2016 and returned a year later in the summer to continue the project. The Nicolet Art Gallery has displayed almost 40 of his photographs at the Nicolet Art Gallery since March 25, and the show will remain until April 19. Pilecky’s first trip was in February, and photo options were somewhat limited by snowy, cold conditions and 23 hours of darkness each day. He returned in June in 2017. “It’s nice in the summertime because the days are about 23 hours long. The temperatures are pleasant, the water in the streams is completely safe to drink, and there are no mosquitoes. But the weather can be your best friend and your worst enemy. My first week it just kept raining—pouring really. I had to force myself to get out and take pictures.” About two-thirds of the pictures are in color, although Pilecky likes to work in black and white as well. Iceland’s long summer sunsets were particularly interesting subject matter for him. He’ll speak for about an hour, and plans to project images of some of the photos featured in the gallery along with others that are not part of the show. “My focus in general is to try to capture the essence of Iceland,” he said. The photos in the gallery are for sale and prices are listed. Each features a certificate of authenticity which includes a miniature version of the picture as well as a narrative sharing information about the subject matter. “This presentation provides a not-to-be missed opportunity for area residents to enjoy a fascinating part of the world most will otherwise never visit,” commented Nicolet College Theatre Director Jim Nuttall. “For others, it may be just the nudge they need to travel there themselves.” Iceland continues to be a powerful lure for Pilecky. He plans to return soon, possibly in June, and certainly in September when he will lead the first of what he hopes will become regularly offered guided photography tours. Admission is free to the travelogue presentation and the art exhibit.
