The year: 1872. The challenge: circumnavigate the world in 80 days. The reward: 20,000 pounds, the equivalent of a few million in today’s dollars, to the first person to complete the task. The antics and challenges that ensue will play out center stage in the Nicolet College Theatre as the National Players theater troupe acts out Jules Verne’s classic tale. Determined to win, Phileas Fogg sets off with a rigid itinerary and bewildered new valet in tow, only to discover that the unpredictable brings more excitement—and romance. “Once Fogg finds love for the world, he finds humanity,” said Alice Kabia, a member of the National Players’ Tour 70. “He was not in touch with it before.” Throughout the performance, which will take place at the Nicolet Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 15, the company travels by boat, train, and elephants in the epic adventure. Admission is $15 and tickets can be purchased online at nicoletlive.com or by calling (715) 365-4646. “Verne’s classic novel was released in 1873, so it is fitting that the theater group performing it here at Nicolet also enjoys a rich history,” commented Nicolet Theatre Director Jim Nuttall. As America’s longest running touring company, established in 1949, the National Players have performed in 41 states, at the White House and for the American military in Europe, Asia and the Arctic Circle. The 10-member ensemble takes on multiple roles in Around the World in 80 Days. Adapted for the stage by Laura Eason and directed by Jared Mezzocchi, who is also credited for the fabulous video projections, the trip is marked by daring rescues, dumb duels, buffalo encounters, a moonlit romance, and an unforgettable ending.
